News ABOUT OuR REOPENING

We pray this message finds everyone healthy in mind, body and spirit. We are reaching out to share some important announcements with our church community.

As the State of Illinois is preparing to move into Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan, your Church Council has been prayerfully considering and deliberating the steps necessary for our church building to reopen. Due to the closure of our building over the last three months, we were required to schedule inspections to ensure a valid Certificate of Occupancy to reenter the building. The utility inspections have been completed (including plumbing, ComEd, as well as Nicor) with report provided to the Village and our insurance company. The Fire and Municipal building inspections are scheduled, with the goal of July 3rd for completion. Assuming inspections pass, they will then be submitted to obtain a valid Certificate of Occupancy.

There are additional steps, however, to be taken before we can safely start to reuse the building. While inspections were required by local ordinance and our insurance company, there is still the issue of air quality and the concern about transmission of the virus. Currently our church building does not have an effective air exchange system. The design of the building does not allow for indoor and outdoor air exchanges and simply by keeping the doors or windows open to significantly reduce the risk of virus spread.  As a result, we have chosen to order plasma filters to improve the air quality.

Plasma filters are the most effective method of filtration in the world. They were initially developed for hospitals to lower the risk of viruses, illness and allergens. These plasma filters use electric fields and discharge ions which capture most airborne bacteria, viruses, pollen as well as molds. In other words, this investment will provide cleaner air quality when running with the doors and windows closed. The plasma filter is built into the air conditioning indoor unit and does not require replacement, only limited cleaning as well as standard maintenance during the life of the system is needed. The cost for this system was approximately $3,000. This is an important step to insure the health and well-being of our members, friends, as well as visitors of St. John’s.

We anticipate all inspections and installation of the filtration system to be completed over the next several weeks.  We are estimating July 26th for the first in-person service back in our building. This is assuming the building passes all inspections and the State of Illinois remains in Phase 4. At that time, small groups and ministries that utilize the building will be allowed to resume convening at the church.

As we lead up to our reopening, Council will continue to send additional updates about the changes we will see in our worship practices as well as protocols for use of the building to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. For now, we wanted to provide this update to ensure you that we are working together to meet our goal of return to in-person worship. Please be aware that our services, even when back in the building, will be livestreamed so no one is required to come to church in order to participate in weekly worship.

We will always be together as followers of Christ no matter how physically distant we may be. This is demonstrated by the ways we have continued to worship and be in community with one another over the last several months. As your Church Council, we always welcome your feedback and consider it in our deliberations. Please reach out with any questions or concerns to Council President, Beth Johnson.

COVID-19 Updates From Pastor Kim

Beloved St. John’s Community:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” ~ Philippians 4:6-7
Our number one concern is the health and well-being –spiritually, physically and mentally – of the St. John’s community. Out of an abundance of love and caution, we have chosen to temporarily postpone worship services and gatherings at the church. The events we had scheduled for March will be postponed and scheduled for a later date. While in this present time there are calls for “physical” distancing, know that we will stay connected to one another as a church community.
I will work to share weekly messages in lieu of church service and along with Council members, will remain in contact during this time. When resources or updates are available, we will share those with you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time, as I am here for each of you and will be working diligently to explore new creative ways for us to “Be the Church” and continue in community with one another despite the challenges of our physical distance from one another. I can be reached at 708-447-0309 or email at kvasko (AT) lyonsucc.org.
A favorite prayer of mine that you may have heard before from the great theologian (and Elmhurst College grad) Reinhold Niebuhr, feels particularly appropriate for this time –Let us pray together in spirit: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that God will make all things right if I surrender to God’s will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with our Creator forever in the next. ~ Amen.
Be well, Do good –Beloved, Love one another always,
Pastor Kim
